Best Songs About Dogs | Megan’s ideas
There are a lot of great love songs, but there are a few with weird lyrics that don’t really suggest that the singer’s object of affection is just a woman. Think back to the words of “Lola” from the Kinks. It’s a catchy tune, with an intelligent inflection delivered by frontman Ray Davies, about a guy going to a bar and meeting a very mysterious woman.
But as the lyrics progress, it’s very evident that this date won’t go as planned. However, they are still playful. “I’m happy to be a man and so is Lola.” Is Lola happy to be a man or is Lola a man too? The lyrics play tricks like that.
Perhaps the funniest part of a songwriter is making listeners believe they are singing about a woman they can’t forget when all they do is fall for their golden doodle. There are many songs about dogs, some about who they are, others more ambiguous in terms of the lyrics. Here is the best of them.
“Jet” – Wings
Paul McCartney’s Band on the Run album is one of the best albums by an artist who left a much larger group for other projects. There’s a story to everything about the album, from the cover art (what is Christopher Lee doing there?) To the fact that Dustin Hoffman was the one who told McCartney what Picasso’s last words were.
Probably one of the most overlooked songs on the album, as most assumed it was a love song with meaningless lyrics, Jet is a catchy number with a great guitar solo. But who knew he was only talking about the color of his “jet” black Labrador? Some of the other lyrics, like whether the major was a lady or not, are best ignored, but the song instantly becomes sweeter when you realize it’s just a guy who loved his dog.
“Me and my arrow” – Harry Nilsson
Harry Nilsson is one of the saddest stories in music. After having success with his cover of Without You and befriending John Lennon, he lost his best friend when Mark David Chapman shot him down outside of Dakota. Nilsson became depressed and essentially died while drinking, and his name has never been as famous as some of his friends.
“Me and My Arrow” is the ultimate dog song, about a man and his dog against the world. There are no lyrical complications, Nilsson just likes Arrow very much, the dog he takes wherever he goes. We’ve all had friends like that.
“I love my dog” – Cat Stevens
Yes, one of the best dog songs was written by a cat. It’s an old joke and I apologize for recycling it. What’s especially funny about this number is that Cat loves her dog so much that he might have to sacrifice any real relationship with women. But Cat covered it up when he started declaring fatwas on Salman Rushdie.
“Martha my dear” – The Beatles
The Beatlemaniacs will know that Martha is McCartney’s sheepdog. McCartney has appeared twice now, and it sort of suits him to make another appearance on this list. He’s the toughest songwriter there is. That’s why he wrote a song called “Silly Love Songs”. He knows what they are, but no one is better at writing them. That it is his dog makes him all the more beautiful.
